There’s really a lot of muddled commentary to be found here.
And inner turmoil! Don’t forget that particularly cherished hallmark of the dick flick. Its ultimate message is terminally mixed: Violence is bad except when you just have to teach the antagonist a lesson and the point must be driven home by a humiliating beat down captured for posterity on a thousand iPhones. In spite of its declarative title, Never Back Down doesn’t come down on either side of the violence dilemma. The violence is lovingly rendered here, with ribbons of spit and blood flying out across the screen in slow-mo every time the hero gets punched in the face. Even with this lack of clarity, Never Back Down does deliver on a promise of a lot of gory action. I wouldn’t have known this from merely watching the film. According to the press kit, MMA is a phenomenon that’s sweeping the country. The one element that could have set the film apart, the spotlight on the Mixed Martial Arts fighting style, gets an unexplained short shrift. After the comely Baja invites Jake to a party, he meets her erstwhile boyfriend, the cruel, bronzed Ryan (Cam Gigandet), de facto champion of the fighting scene. Jake is sucked into this world by two cookie cutter characters: new friend Max Cooperman (Evan Peters), a Ron Weasley-goes-skating AV nerd with a modicum of coolness, and button nosed vanilla pop Baja Miller (Amber Heard). He’s just mad at the world, trying desperately to restrain his tendency towards aggression while everything around him is begging to be ripped apart. Running time: 1 hour 53 minutes. In the first 10 minutes Jake is established as walking cornhusk with a precarious emotional trigger. For those who make it to the final beatdown, however, the only pill worth taking is the one that makes you forget.ĭirected by Jeff Wadlow written by Chris Hauty director of photography, Lukas Ettlin edited by Victor Dubois and Debra Weinfeld music by Michael Wandmacher production designer, Ida Random produced by Craig Baumgarten and David Zelon released by Summit Entertainment. As Jake, his schoolyard nemesis (Cam Gigandet) and his martial-arts mentor (a slumming Djimon Hounsou) work out their daddy issues on one another, the movie speeds up and slows down as though controlled by a director in the grip of competing medications. Manifesting all the nuance and insight of a music video, “Never Back Down” plays like a pop-psychology seminar on fathers and sons.
Enrolled in a high school where social status is determined by the ability to render peers unconscious with your bare hands, Jake finally discovers the therapeutic benefits of breaking faces. This will become an asset when the family moves to Florida to further the tennis aspirations of Jake’s younger brother (a delightful Wyatt Smith). Setting the tone immediately, this lunkheaded film by Jeff Wadlow opens with a brawl, from which we gather that the instigator, the Iowa teenager Jake Tyler (Sean Faris), has never heard of anger management. A “Fight Club” for high-schoolers, “Never Back Down” offers extreme fighting as the modern-day alternative to sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll.
